The church in Ephesus was a hot bed of cultural, ethnic, and theological tension. The city was famous for its temple to the goddess Artemis (Diana), which contained a magical statute that the citizens believed had fallen from heaven. Ephesus boasted a very large outdoor theater which provided plays and other activities to feed the cultural appetites of the region. Ephesian believers found themselves trying to live holy lives surrounded by a seductive secular culture. Inside the church, Jewish and Gentile believers fought with each other over their place in God’s kingdom. Ethnic resentment fueled theological battles.
This class will do an in depth study of the book of Ephesians. We will look at Paul’s theological thesis in chapter one, which underlies the rest of the book. We will see how Paul reveals the mystery of the Church Age for the very first time. We will study Paul’s teachings on relationships based on mutual submission. Relying heavily on the Greek and English texts, we will examine Paul’s theological arguments and how his teachings can be applied to our lives as believers.
